Sacred Art Music from Northern India with Alexis and Lila

About Your Hosts Lila and Alexis

Lïla has been practicing the art of Dhrupad since 2009, student of Pandit Ritwik Sanyal in the Dagar Family Tradition. Originally trained as a visual artist, she received her BFA in experimental filmmaking from the University of Colorado. As an experimentalist, with a background in blues, folk and musical theater, she was drawn to the exploratory and improvisational elements of Dhrupad music, in addition to its emphasis on process -- a life path to unravel the secrets of the inner voice.

Alexis chose to learn tabla from the Benares family of music for its expressive and poetic style. Student of Shubh Maharaj, he has been under rigourous training since 2005. Years later he took up the pakhawaj, under the guidance of Mohan Shyam Sharma and presently performs and teaches with both the tabla and the pakhawaj.

He has accompanied various dancers of kathak and odissi, classical indian dance forms, as well as sitarists, violinists, bansuri flutists and vocalists, in France as well as in India.
